Περίληψη: Σκοπός του σεμιναρίου είναι να εξετάσει μερικές από τις ιδέες της νεώτερης και σύγχρονης φιλοσοφίας που έχουν επηρεάσει την αρχαιολογική σκέψη, καθώς αφορούν τη σχέση του ανθρώπου με τον υλικό πολιτισμό. Έμφαση δίνεται στις πρόσφατες σχεσιακές και μετανθρωπιστικές προσεγγίσεις. Οι φοιτήτριες/φοιτητές επιλέγουν εκπροσώπους της φιλοσοφίας ή της ευρύτερα οριζόμενης ως κοινωνιολογικής θεωρίας (π.χ. Μως, Ingold, Φουκώ, Gell, Λατούρ, DeLanda κ.ά.), αλλά και της ίδιας της αρχαιολογικής θεωρίας (π.χ. Barrett, Hodder, Knappett, Malafouris), συζητούν τις ιδέες καθαυτές και βρίσκουν ένα συναφές αρχαιολογικό παράδειγμα για να κατανοήσουν το προϊστορικό Αιγαίο μέσα από τις ιδέες αυτές.

Summary: The seminar aims to examine several ideas of modern and contemporary philosophy that have influenced archaeological thought, since they refer to the relation of people to material culture. Emphasis is placed upon the recent relational and post-humanist approaches. Students select representatives of philosophy or the wider defined social theory (e.g. Mauss, Foucault, Gell, Latour, DeLanda etc.), but also of archaeological theory itself (e.g. Barrett, Hodder, Knappett, Malafouris), they discuss their ideas themselves and they find suitable archaeological examples in order to understand the prehistoric Aegean through them.

Περίληψη: Σκοπός του σεμιναρίου είναι να επανεξετάσει μερικές από τις ιδέες και ερμηνείες του Sir Arthur Evans για το μινωικό πολιτισμό, κάτω από το πρίσμα των σύγχρονων αρχαιολογικών ανακαλύψεων και θεωριών. Ανάμεσα σε άλλα, θα συζητηθούν το ζήτημα της χρονολόγησης των διαφόρων περιόδων της κρητικής Πρωτοϊστορίας, το πρόβλημα της παρουσίας των Μυκηναίων στην Κρήτη, το ζήτημα της «μινωικής ειρήνης» και εκείνο της κυριαρχίας των Μινωιτών στο Αιγαίο και την Ανατολική Μεσόγειο, που οι επιστήμονες αποκάλεσαν «μινωική θαλασσοκρατία».  

Summary: The aim of the seminar is to restudy some of the ideas and interpretations for the Minoan civilization given by Sir Arthur Evans, in the light of modern archaeological discoveries and theories. Among others, the question of dating the various periods of the Cretan Proto-history, the problem of the Mycenaean presence in Crete, the matter of the so-called “pax minoica” and that of the Minoan dominance on the Aegean and the East Mediterranean –which scholars have called as “Minoan thalassocracy”- will be discussed.

Περίληψη: Στόχος του σεμιναρίου είναι η εξοικείωση των συμμετεχόντων με τη μελέτη των μυκηναϊκών ανακτορικών οικονομιών και των πολιτικών συστημάτων που τα υποστήριζαν. Η κύρια πηγή μας θα είναι τα τεκμήρια της λεγόμενης Γραμμικής Β γραφής, η οποία χρησιμοποιούνταν ανάμεσα στο 14ο και στο 12ο αι. π.Χ. για να αποδώσει μια ελληνική διάλεκτο, καλύπτοντας τις ανάγκες καταγραφής των ανακτορικών γραφειοκρατιών της κεντρικής και νότιας ηπειρωτικής Ελλάδας, αλλά και της Κρήτης. Η παρουσίαση των βασικών αρχών μεθοδολογίας και ερμηνείας θα εστιάσει τόσο σε συγκεκριμένα θέματα που καταγράφονται στα κείμενα, όσο και σε συγκεκριμένα τεκμήρια. Οι συμμετέχοντες θα ασκηθούν στους βασικούς τρόπους εργασίας της Μυκηναϊκής επιγραφικής και στους τρόπους με τους οποίους οι ενδείξεις των κειμένων μπορούν να ενσωματωθούν στις αρχαιολογικές συζητήσεις. Ιδιαίτερη ενθάρρυνση θα δοθεί στην ενεργή εμπλοκή αρχαιολογικών και εικονογραφικών ενδείξεων στη μελέτη και αξιοποίηση των πληροφοριών των κειμένων, με στόχο και την ανάδειξη των διαφορετικών ‘οπτικών γωνιών’ και προτεραιοτήτων/ενδιαφερόντων των ανακτορικών ομάδων εξουσίας, όπως αυτές ανακλώνται στις διάφορες κατηγορίες ενδείξεων.

Summary: This seminar aims to familiarize participants with the study of Mycenaean palatial economies and their political systems. Our main primary source are the documents in the so-called Linear B script, used between the 14th and 12th centuries BC to render a Greek dialect, covering the book-keeping needs of palatial bureaucracies in the central and southern Greek Mainland, as well as Crete. The presentation of basic principles in methodology and interpretation will focus on specific topics dealt with in the texts, as well as specific documents or sets of documents. Participants will be trained in the basic modus operandi of Mycenaean epigraphy and in the ways in which textual evidence can be integrated in archaeological discussions. The synthesis of archaeological and iconographic evidence in textual interpretation will be particularly encouraged, aiming at highlighting the various perspectives, interests and priorities of palatial elites, as reflected in the various categories of the extant evidence.

Περίληψη: Η μελέτη των περιβαλλοντικών αλλαγών κατά το παρελθόν μπορεί να μας διαφωτίσει για το παρόν και το μέλλον. Για τον αρχαιολόγο είναι πολύ σημαντική η γνώση των βασικών γεωλογικών και  οικολογικών παραγόντων που επηρεάζουν τη ζωή και τη δράση του ανθρώπου και των λοιπών ζώντων οργανισμών. Στο σεμινάριο θα εξετασθούν ο οι εφαρμογές τους στην προϊστορική αρχαιολογία. Οι μεταβολές του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος και του γεωαναγλύφου ιδιαίτερα κατά τους  προϊστορικούς  χρόνους έπαιξαν σημαντικό ρόλο στην μετακίνηση αγαθών και ιδεών, στην ανάπτυξη ή εγκατάλειψη  οικισμών. Θα παρουσιαστούν οι κύριες μέθοδοι μελέτης των βιοαρχαιολογικών καταλοίπων,  με στόχο την ασφαλέστερη αναγνώριση του κάθε είδους και την συμβολή τους στην πληρέστερη κατανόηση του αρχαιολογικού συνόλου.

Περίληψη: Αντικείμενο του σεμιναρίου θα αποτελέσει η μελέτη των ιερών χώρων και των λατρευτικών πρακτικών στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο κατά την Εποχή του Χαλκού και την Πρώιμη Εποχή του Σιδήρου. Θα εξετασθούν οι αρχαιολογικές μαρτυρίες για τη διαμόρφωση, τη χρήση και τη λειτουργία ιερών και λατρευτικών χώρων, καθώς και η σχέση τους με την κοινωνική οργάνωση, την πολιτική εξουσία και την οικονομία. Summary: This seminar will examine sacred spaces and cult practices in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. Particular attention will be paid to the archaeological evidence for the construction, use, and function of sanctuaries and cultic areas, as well as to their relationship with social organization, political authority, and economic structures. Emphasis will be placed on Anatolia, the Levant, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Cyprus, with the aim of developing a comparative understanding of religious expression and ritual practice in the Eastern Mediterranean during the 3rd and early 1st millennia BC.

Περίληψη: Θέμα του σεμιναρίου είναι τα αρχαιολογικά δεδομένα που σχετίζονται με τις τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις και καινοτομίες στην κεραμική, τη μεταλλουργία, τη λιθοτεχνία, και την κατασκευή λίθινων αγγείων και σφραγίδων στο Αιγαίο της Πρώιμης Εποχής του Χαλκού. Προσεγγίζονται ζητήματα όπως η εκμετάλλευση των πηγών, η διακίνηση και τα στάδια επεξεργασίας της πρώτης ύλης, οι τεχνικές παραγωγής, οι κατηγορίες των αντικειμένων, τα περιβάλλοντά εύρεσης και η διακίνησή τους. Συζητούνται τα υπάρχοντα ερμηνευτικά σχήματα, και ιδιαίτερη σημασία δίνεται στις αλληλεπιδράσεις μεταξύ της τεχνολογίας και του κοινωνικού, πολιτικού, οικονομικού και πολιτισμικού πλαισίου. Τέλος, προσεγγίζονται ζητήματα όπως η τεχνική εξειδίκευση, η τεχνολογία ως πολιτισμικό φαινόμενο, και οι πολιτισμικές παράμετροι που καθορίζουν την εμφάνιση και την αποδοχή μιας τεχνολογικής καινοτομίας.

Summary: The course deals with the archaeological evidence about technological development and innovation in the Early Bronze Age Aegean, including pottery technology, metallurgy, chipped stone industry, and stone curving and glyptic. The issues addressed include the distribution of raw material sources, the technical procedures for the transformation of raw materials into finished objects, the types of products, their contexts and distribution. Existing theoretical approaches are discussed, and special emphasis is given on the bidirectional relationships between technology and its social, economic, political and cultural context. Additional issues discussed include technical specialization, the non-material aspect of technology, and the cultural parameters which affect the appearance and adoption of technological innovations.

Θέμα: Τέχνη και τεχνολογία της αρχαίας ελληνικής ζωγραφικής: Διεπιστημονικές προσεγγίσεις και σύγχρονες αναγνώσεις (Εποχή του Χαλκού – Ελληνιστικοί χρόνοι)

Subject:The art and craft of Ancient Greek painting: interdisciplinary approaches and modern readings (Bronze Age - Hellenistic period)

Περίληψη: Στο σεμινάριο εξετάζεται η τέχνη της αρχαίας ζωγραφικής μέσω της διεπιστημονικής μελέτης της ως ύλη και εικόνα, από την άνθησή της στα ανακτορικά περιβάλλοντα της 2ης χιλιετίας στο χώρο του προϊστορικού Αιγαίου, μέχρι την ταφική της χρήση σε μνημεία των ύστερων κλασικών και ελληνιστικών χρόνων στην Μακεδονία. Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δίδεται στην τεχνολογία της ζωγραφικής, στη σύσταση και στις εφαρμογές των αρχαίων υλικών (χρωστικές και συνδετικές ύλες) και τεχνικών, οι οποίες διερευνώνται μέσω καινοτόμων φυσικο-χημικών μεθόδων διάγνωσης, καθώς και στην αλληλεπίδραση τεχνικής, καλλιτεχνικού ύφους και αισθητικής.

H ζωγραφική εξετάζεται τόσο ως εικαστικό φαινόμενο, δηλαδή ως μια μορφή καλλιτεχνικής έκφρασης και δημιουργίας, όσο και ως υλικός πολιτισμός, δηλαδή ως ένα προϊόν που αντικατοπτρίζει τις κοινωνικές και πολιτισμικές αξίες μιας εποχής. Στόχος του σεμιναρίου είναι να προσφέρει στους φοιτητές μια πληρέστερη και σε βάθος κατανόηση των ποικίλων εκφάνσεων της αρχαίας ζωγραφικής σε διαφορετικά χρονολογικά και γεωγραφικά συμφραζόμενα, συνδυάζοντας τις πληροφορίες που εξάγονται από την κλασική αρχαιολογία και την ιστορία της τέχνης με τα νέα δεδομένα και δυνατότητες που προσφέρει η χρήση τεχνολογιών αιχμής και εργαλείων τεχνητής νοημοσύνης. Μέσω αυτών των εφαρμογών επιχειρείται η ανασύνθεση των αποσπασματικών εικόνων και η ορθότερη πρόσληψη της εικονογραφίας και της χρωματικής αρμονίας τους.

Summary: The seminar examines the art and craft of ancient painting in the Aegean through an interdisciplinary lens, from its first flourishing in palatial contexts during the 2nd millennium BCE (Middle and, especially, Late Bronze Age) until its uses in Late Classical and Hellenistic Macedonia. Special emphasis is placed on the technology of painting, the composition and application of ancient materials (pigments and binding media) and techniques, studied through innovative scientific methods of identification, as well as in the interaction between technique, style and aesthetic perception.

Painting is examined as visual representation, a form of artistic expression and creativity, as well as a aspect of material culture, produced in (and reflective of) social and cultural values of a specific setting. The course aims to offer a comprehensive in-depth understanding of the various facets of ancient painting in different chronological and geographic contexts, combining information from archaeology and art history with the new potential offered using cutting-edge technologies and AI tools. Through such means, one may attempt the reconstruction of images and approach their proper iconographic and visual perception.
