Ο Γιάννης Παπαδάτος είναι Καθηγητής Προϊστορικής Αρχαιολογίας στο Τμήμα Ιστορίας και Αρχαιολογίας του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών.

Έλαβε το πτυχίο του στην Αρχαιολογία και Ιστορία της Τέχνης από το Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών, Τμήμα Ιστορίας και Αρχαιολογίας (1994) και το διδακτορικό του δίπλωμα στην Προϊστορική Αρχαιολογία από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Sheffield, Τμήμα Αρχαιολογίας και Προϊστορίας (1999). Εργάστηκε ως Μεταδιδακτορικός Ερευνητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Sheffield (2001-2002) και ως συμβασιούχος αρχαιολόγος στην Αρχαιολογική Υπηρεσία (2002-2007). Έχει επίσης εργαστεί ως εξωτερικός συνεργάτης στο Ελληνικό Ανοιχτό Πανεπιστήμιο (2002-2010) διδάσκοντας μαθήματα για τον ελληνικό πολιτισμό, την αρχαιολογία και την αρχαία τέχνη.

Διευθύνει προγράμματα εργασιών πεδίου στην ανατολική Κρήτη. Τα κύρια ερευνητικά του ενδιαφέροντα περιλαμβάνουν την Πρώιμη και Μέση Εποχή του Χαλκού στο Αιγαίο, τη Μινωική Κρήτη, την Ταφική Αρχαιολογία και την Αρχαία Τεχνολογία της Κεραμικής και των Μετάλλων.
